Did you know that young women and students of color are more likely to pursue a STEM college degree and career if they participate in a FIRST  Robotics team? Amazon Future Engineer has partnered with Seattle Public Schools, and FIRST Washington to bring computer science and robotics to up to 30 low income Seattle Public Schools.

We need Amazon employees of all backgrounds (tech/non-tech) to help these kids get started learning to build and problem solve as teams.

See the different ways to volunteer below and fill out the sign up form.

Mentor a Team

As a mentor, you will be the resource that the students can’t find anywhere else. Sharing your knowledge will foster their intellectual growth and inspire them for the future.

FIRST LEGO League: Grades 4-8 Ages 9-14

Work with a group of up to 10 students at a school and a teacher directly and show them the wonders of STEM/STEAM and teamwork! FIRST LEGO League mentors typically meet 2x week after school for an hour-2 hours. As a FLL Coach/Mentor you along with your fellow coaches/mentors can work to set a meeting schedule that works best for you and the team. FLL teams meet September – December with qualifier competitions the first two weekends in December.

FIRST Tech Challenge: Grades 7-12 Ages 12-18

Work with a group of up to 15 students at a school and a teacher directly and help students design, build, and program a robot. Work with students to develop their engineering notebook. As a FTC Coach/Mentor you along with your fellow coaches/mentors can work to set a meeting schedule that works best for you and the team. FTC teams meet starting in September with competitions beginning in November.

Volunteer at an Event

Event volunteering gives you a chance to see what the students can do, while offering them a place to share it with the community. There are many unique roles for you that will make a change in the students’ lives.

Judge, No Experience Necessary!: FIRST Washington trains you the day of the event for an 8 hour volunteer opportunity on a Saturday or Sunday the first two weekends in December. As a judge you are paired with at least one other judge (likely a veteran judge) where you will meet with teams, hear their presentation and ask them questions to learn more about what they have learned over their FIRST experience and this year’s challenge.

Referee!: This is an 8 hour volunteer opportunity on a Saturday or Sunday the first two weekends in December. As a referee you will be paired with a veteran referee where you will watch teams compete on the field with their robot, identify rule violations, assess field for scoring of matches, and participate in deliberations regarding contested calls and official scores. You will work under the direction of the head referee.
