Power Play Coach Email Volume 11: 11-1-22 – Events are this weekend!
Greetings Coaches & Mentors!
If you are new to this email this is the place where you will find all of the Washington specific FIRST Tech Challenge information. Coaches in the FIRST system for the Power Play season will be added weekly. Every email from me will be numbered and that number lets you know which update it is, if you miss an update you can find it on our website.
Here is what I have for you today:
- Invoices were due Monday, 10-24
- Looks like OSPI grants have been released (check with your school Admin)
- Events are this weekend, are you prepared?
- When do Dean’s List nominations need to be submitted?
- FTC Coaches Chat next Thursday, 11-10 at 7:00 pm
- FTC Tuesday’s with Kevin
- Onshape with Kevin Tues only this week (moving to Mon & Tues starting Nov 7)
Invoices Were due Monday, October 24
Invoices were sent out Monday Oct 17 to either the Admin listed for your team or The Lead Contact 1. The invoice come directly from our accounting software, not a firstwa email so you should look for something from comms@aplos.org. Please check your spam folder if you do not see the invoice in your in box.
The date you need to have secured your invoice has passed, it was October 24. You can secure your your invoice with a PO from your school, by check or credit card. Please be sure your invoice is secured prior to your first event this weekend.
Our staff is busy supporting teams and helping to get events ready for all of our programs, please don’t add un-necessary work to our already heavy work load by causing us to have to contact you prior to this weekend about a past due bill.
If you have an issue with securing your invoice, email Adrienne at acollins@firstwa.org
Looks like OSPI Grants have been released
If you are a public school and applied for an iGrant (OSPI grant) it looks like OSPI has released their grant awards. Please check with your school administrator who approved the grant for details as to your award
Events are this weekend, are you prepared?
As we get close to our first round of FTC league events, I want to remind you all that to be event ready you must:
- Have a lead 1 and lead 2 coach listed on your dashboard (An admin does not count as Lead 1 or Lead 2, you need to have both of those spots filled
- Both must have signed consent forms and passed ypp
- Get your students listed on your teams’s dashboard and have their parents sign consent forms. If you need paper consent forms, email Adrienne at acollins@firstwa.org
- Remember, you must bring your team roster to all of your events.
You all should have received event info from your League Coordinator telling you the specific details for your event and what you should bring with you. If you have not heard from your League Coordinator, email Adrienne and she can connect you.
When do Dean’s List nominations need to be submitted by?
We will once again be holding a remote Dean’s List event in January. More details on this event will come toward the end of November.
Dean’s List submissions, will be due by December 15
Our next Coaches Chat will be 7:00 pm Thursday, November 10
We will have our next Coaches Chat on Thursday, November 10th from 7-8 pm. For those of you who are new to FTC, this is an opportunity to see what is going on with FTC in Washington as well as to connect with other coaches in Washington and share ideas.
We look forward to seeing everyone on the 15th and hearing what you think about this year’s challenge!

Onshape with Kevin every Tuesday only this week and moving to Monday November 7
Onshape CAD Tuesday with Kevin (Tuesdays 7pm to 8:30pm)
Onshape CAD Monday with Kevin (starting Nov 7 pm to 8 pm, this will be more FRC focused but FTC teams still welcome)
Online help learning about CAD using Onshape. This 90 minute session will help get you started and help solve your CAD issues using Onshape. Many of the techniques will apply to other CAD programs as well, but this one will specifically use Onshape. Learn about assemblies, importing parts from vendors like Rev Robotics and AndyMark, modifying parts, creating your own parts for 3D printing, and working with a team on a project. Onshape is free for every FIRST participant and runs on a wide array of hardware because it is web based. You will, however, want a three button mouse. Specifically, a mouse with a left and right button plus a center scrolling mouse button. You can get one for about $6 from Amazon prime. CAD programs work very poorly on laptops with finger pads (trackpads).
Onshape CAD will be applicable to both FTC and FRC. All are welcome.
The first week (9/13 and 9/14) both days will focus on getting you and your team setup to use Onshape in an efficient way, demos on what the program does, and a tour of where to find the tutorials and which ones to start with.
All of these meetings start on 9/13/2022 and will be each week until December 14th. They all use the following Zoom link:
