Advancement from the State Championship
I wanted to update you on the plan for advancing after the State Championships.
Things will be handled a little differently this season compared to seasons past. This is FIRST Headquarters process, not FIRST Washingtons. If you have feedback you can reach out to FIRST directly fllchallenge@firstinspires.org
FIRST is no longer allocating spots at World Festival. They are choosing regions to allocate spots based on a lottery. Washington State is a region. For the lottery allocation purpose, the team numbers used reflect the number of registered teams in each region in the U.S. and Canada from the prior season. In the CARGO CONNECT season, FLL Challenge had more than 13,000 registered teams within the U.S. and Canada and only 54 World Festival invitations available. For that reason, you can see just how few teams can attend World Festival each year.
FLL Challenge is allocated 108 World Festival spots for 2023. 54 of those spots are for U.S./Canada teams and 54 of those spots are allocated for teams outside the U.S. and Canada (also referred to as international).
The lottery process for U.S. and Canada:
1. Regions that did not have at least 24 registered teams in CARGO CONNECT are not included in the lottery.
2. Regions with 24-100 teams will have 1 entry into the lottery.
3. Regions with 101-300 teams will have 2 entries into the lottery.
4. Regions with 301 or more will have3 entries into the lottery.
We had just under 300 teams, so 2 entries in the lottery, and we were lucky to be awarded one spot!
Now some exciting news! In addition to the one World Festival spot, we have 3 spots to Open Invitationals! These events are invite only, similar to a championship event, and have teams from around the world attending.
We have one in Southern California, one in Arkansas, and one in Australia!
Now for our process-
The two teams that win the Champions award- one from the Eastern Washington Championship and one from the Western Washington Championship- will be entered into a drawing. The first team selected will choose one event out of the 4 options. After they have chosen, then the second team will choose from the remaining 3 options. The 2 Champions Finalist teams will then be entered into a drawing. The first Finalist team selected will get to choose between the remaining 2, the second will get the 4th event.
Teams are not required to attend any of the events offered. They may opt out of attending at all. All costs associated are the teams responsibility (registration, flights, hotel, transportation etc. ).
If there are any events still available after the 4 teams have chosen or declined, then I will offer a sign up to the teams that attended the state events and will do a drawing from the interested teams.
Good luck to all the teams!
